How to prevent mold in humid Jumeirah villa closet?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bedroom closet on the inside wall has developed these black speckles, and my clothes have started to smell damp and musty. I first noticed it a couple of weeks ago when the humidity really spiked, and it seems to be getting worse despite me trying to air it out. I’m in a villa in Jumeirah and I’m really worried it’s black mold. Besides cleaning it, what’s the best long-term solution to stop this from coming back, especially with another humid season coming up?

Black speckles and a musty smell in a closet on an interior wall are classic signs of a mold issue, almost certainly fueled by our high humidity and condensation. The long-term solution requires addressing the moisture source, not just cleaning the visible growth.
First, identify why moisture is accumulating there. An interior closet wall is often a cold spot, especially if it's adjacent to an AC duct chase or an external wall. This creates condensation when humid air enters. Check that the closet door is properly sealed and consider leaving it ajar periodically to equalize humidity with the air-conditioned room. A small, battery-operated dehumidifier or desiccant pods like silica gel can help, but they are a temporary measure. The most effective prevention is controlling the room's overall humidity. Ensure your AC unit is correctly sized and functioning efficiently; it is your primary dehumidifier. Run it consistently, even when you're out, to maintain a stable humidity level below 60%. Improve air circulation in the bedroom by using a ceiling or standing fan, and direct some airflow towards the closet area. For a more permanent solution, have an HVAC technician assess if adding a dedicated vent or improving insulation in that wall is feasible. Given the visible growth and musty odour, a professional inspection is wise to determine the extent. They can use a moisture meter to find the exact source and recommend targeted remediation. In many Dubai villas, this type of hidden condensation issue is common and requires a systemic approach to humidity control. |
