How to treat closet mold in Dubai's humidity?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has started getting these black speckles on my leather bags and shoes. It’s been getting worse since the weather turned more humid last month, and I’m worried it’s going to ruin my clothes. What’s the best way to treat this mold and are there any specific dehumidifiers or moisture absorbers that work well in Dubai’s climate to stop it from coming back?

That's a classic sign of a condensation issue, very common in Dubai's climate, especially on external walls. The wall is cooler than the humid room air, causing moisture to condense and feed mold growth on the organic dust and fibers there.

First, address the immediate problem. Remove all items from the closet. For hard surfaces, wipe down with a diluted white vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 1 part water) or a dedicated mold-cleaning product. For leather goods, use a leather cleaner specifically designed for mold; test on a small, hidden area first. Never use bleach, as it can damage materials and only lightens the mold temporarily without killing the root structure.

To stop it from returning, you must control the humidity. A small desiccant-type dehumidifier is more effective than refrigerant models in Dubai's often cooler AC environments; look for units with a capacity suitable for a small room. Reusable moisture absorbers like silica gel canisters are also effective inside the closet itself. Ensure there's a small air gap between the wall and your furniture to allow for circulation.

For a permanent solution, identify the root cause. The external wall may lack proper insulation, creating a cold bridge. A professional inspection can use a thermal camera to identify these precise condensation points and recommend targeted remediation, which is often more effective than general dehumidification alone. If the mold is widespread or returns quickly, a lab test can identify the species to confirm it's a common allergen and not a more problematic type.
