Mold in storage causing cough and headaches« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and I’ve been getting terrible headaches. I just pulled our winter clothes out of the storage cupboard under the stairs and found a bunch of jackets and blankets covered in black, fuzzy spots. The whole area smells really damp. Could this mold be causing our health issues and what’s the fastest way to deal with it in this humidity?

Yes, the mold you discovered is very likely causing those symptoms. The damp, confined space under the stairs is a classic breeding ground, and the black, fuzzy growth is often indicative of a significant colony. In Dubai's high humidity, items in storage can develop mold in a matter of weeks, especially if there's any prior moisture or condensation from nearby AC ducting.

The persistent cough and headaches are common reactions to mold exposure, particularly in children, as their respiratory systems are more sensitive. Inhaling the microscopic spores released by the mold irritates the airways and can trigger allergic responses. The musty smell confirms active microbial growth releasing compounds into the air.

For immediate action, first restrict access to the area to prevent further exposure. Do not attempt to clean the items with bleach or simply wipe them down; this can aerosolize a high concentration of spores, making the problem worse. The fastest and most effective way to deal with this is to seal the moldy textiles in heavy-duty plastic bags for professional remediation assessment and disposal.

The underlying cause must be addressed. The humidity under the stairs needs to be controlled. Check for any plumbing leaks from above or a sweating cold water pipe. More often, it's due to a lack of ventilation. Installing a small, battery-operated humidity monitor can confirm levels. For a permanent solution, consider having a ventilation grille installed in the cupboard door to allow air circulation or using a small, rechargeable desiccant dehumidifier inside the space to keep it dry.

Given the extent of the growth and the acute health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can assess the contamination level on both the contents and the structure itself, identify the moisture source precisely, and perform the remediation safely to contain the spores, which is critical for resolving the health issues.
