Is black mold in Dubai villa safe for toddler?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, probably from a slow AC leak. My husband thinks we can just spray it with bleach, but I’m worried about our toddler’s breathing since he’s been coughing more lately. Is this something we can safely handle ourselves, or do we absolutely need to call a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai?

Black mold in a Dubai villa is a legitimate health concern, especially for a toddler with a developing respiratory system. The high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold growth from even a minor leak. While not all black-colored mold is the notorious Stigminium or Aspergillus niger strains commonly found here, any significant growth can release spores that irritate airways, potentially explaining the increased coughing.
Bleach is not recommended. It only removes surface discoloration on non-porous materials but does not kill the root structure penetrating drywall or wood. More critically, bleaching can agitate the colony, causing a sudden release of a high concentration of spores and harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air your toddler breathes. For a small patch (under one square foot), careful DIY may be possible if the underlying moisture issue is completely resolved. You must isolate the area, wear an N95 mask and gloves, and use a detergent solution—not bleach—to gently clean. However, given the location is a closet (indicating potential moisture in walls) and the presence of a toddler, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can conduct air quality tests to identify the spore types and concentrations, which is the only way to gauge the actual risk. Remediation companies follow strict protocols to contain the area, use HEPA filtration to capture spores, and remove contaminated materials safely. The priority is to protect your family's health by accurately assessing the situation first. |
