Professional mold remediation needed for villa bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has had this damp, earthy smell ever since the weather started getting humid a couple of months ago. I finally pulled the wardrobe away from the wall yesterday and found a patch of black mold, about the size of a large dinner plate, behind it. I'm worried about my family's health and the wall itself. For a job like this in a villa, should I just try to clean it myself with bleach or is it worth getting a professional mold remediation company, and what would the cost range be for something this size?

In your Jumeirah villa's climate, professional remediation is strongly advised for a patch that size. Dubai's high humidity, especially during summer months, creates ideal conditions for mold growth behind furniture where condensation can form against cooler exterior walls. The visible patch is often just the surface; the underlying moisture issue likely extends deeper into the wall structure.

Cleaning it yourself with bleach is a temporary fix at best. Bleach only removes surface discoloration and does not address the root moisture problem or kill the hyphae (roots) embedded in porous materials like drywall or plaster. For a proper remediation, the affected section of wall likely needs to be cut out, the area dried with professional equipment, and the structure treated with antimicrobial solutions before rebuilding.

The cost for a professional job is not typically based on the visible size alone, as it depends on the extent of water damage, the type of construction materials, and the required containment measures to prevent spore spread. For a contained bedroom area, expect the process to be a multi-day project involving assessment, containment, removal, and verification. Always request a post-remediation verification test from an independent lab to confirm the space is safe; any reputable provider will facilitate this. For health safety and to prevent structural decay, a professional assessment is the necessary first step.
