Is black mold causing my wife's headaches?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It’s been incredibly humid lately and that wall feels cold. My wife has started getting bad headaches in the morning and I'm worried it's connected. How urgent is it to get this professionally cleaned, or can I handle it myself with bleach this weekend?

Headaches can be caused by many factors, but exposure to certain types of mould is a known trigger for symptoms like sinus pressure and morning headaches, especially in individuals with sensitivities. The cold wall and recent high humidity point to condensation, which is a prime breeding ground for mould in Dubai's climate.
While the term "black mould" is often used generally, the specific species is what determines the health risk. Stachybotrys chartarum, the type most associated with the "toxic black mould" label, is less common but can produce mycotoxins. More common blackish moulds like Aspergillus or Cladosporium are irritants that can still provoke allergic reactions and headaches. Bleach is not recommended. It is mostly water, which can feed the mould roots deep in porous surfaces like drywall, and its fumes are themselves an irritant. DIY cleaning often disturbs the mould, releasing more spores into your living space and potentially worsening symptoms. For a patch larger than a square meter, or if it has returned after a previous cleaning, professional assessment is advised. In the UAE, remediation standards focus on containment and removal of affected materials to prevent cross-contamination. A professional inspection can identify the moisture source (like a thermal bridge in the wall or AC condensate leak) and the mould species through lab analysis. This is crucial, as knowing the exact type confirms the risk level and guides the proper remediation protocol. Addressing the root moisture issue is the only way to prevent it from returning. For your wife's health, identifying and properly removing the source is the most urgent step. |
