Safest way to remove toddler's room mold?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since we got back from the summer holidays, and I’ve just discovered patches of black mold behind their bedroom wardrobe, which is against an exterior wall in our Jumeirah villa. It must have grown over the humid summer while the AC was off. What is the safest and most effective way to get this removed completely, given that my toddlers are always in that room?

For toddlers' rooms, the safest approach is professional remediation. The black mold behind the wardrobe is likely Stachybotrys, which can produce mycotoxins. Disturbing it yourself risks sending a high concentration of spores into the air your children breathe.

In Dubai, the high humidity and condensation on exterior walls when AC is off create perfect conditions for this. The remediation process must include containment—sealing the area with plastic sheeting to prevent cross-contamination—and the use of HEPA-filtered air scrubbers to capture airborne spores.

Do not use bleach; it only removes the colour and leaves the moisture problem unsolved. Professionals use specialized antimicrobial agents. Crucially, the root cause must be fixed. This means having the exterior wall inspected for leaks or inadequate insulation and ensuring your AC system is running correctly to manage indoor humidity levels year-round.

For verification, a post-remediation viability test from an independent lab is the only way to confirm the mold has been properly addressed and the room is safe. Given the health symptoms and the type of mold suspected, this is not a DIY project.
