Safest DIY way to remove black mold?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I’ve just spotted patches of black mold growing in the corners of our master bathroom in our Jumeirah villa. It’s been so humid lately that the walls never seem to fully dry out, even with the exhaust fan running. What is the safest and most effective way to get rid of this myself without exposing my family to harsh chemicals?

Start with a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water in a spray bottle; vinegar is effective against most common household molds and is far less irritating than bleach. Spray it generously on the visible mold, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff-bristled brush. For porous surfaces like grout, a paste of baking soda and water can provide extra abrasion. Always wear an N95 mask and gloves during the process to avoid inhaling spores or getting them on your skin.
The high humidity here means the root cause is excess moisture. Your exhaust fan may not be powerful enough for the room's size. Run it for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet walls and glass with a squeegee. A portable dehumidifier can make a significant difference in pulling moisture from the air between uses. If the mold patch is larger than one square meter, has a persistent musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, the growth is likely behind the tiles or within the wall. In these cases, DIY methods only address the surface, and professional inspection with moisture mapping is needed to find and resolve the hidden source. For families with respiratory sensitivity, a lab test can identify the mold species to better understand the potential risk. |
