Safely remove bathroom mold with kids and pets?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I've just spotted black patches of mold growing behind the toilet in our master bathroom. It's been incredibly humid in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle for the last few weeks, and the bathroom window just doesn't seem to cut it for ventilation. What's the safest and most effective way to get rid of this mold myself, considering I have young children and pets in the house?

Bathroom mold in Dubai's humidity is very common due to the constant condensation from air conditioning meeting warm, moist air. For a small patch behind a toilet, you can handle it safely with children and pets present.

First, contain the area. Keep kids and pets out of the bathroom during the process and for several hours after. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. For cleaning, a simple solution of distilled white vinegar is often effective and is one of the safer options. Spray it directly on the mold, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush and rinse. Alternatively, a diluted mixture of 1 part bleach to 10 parts water can be used, but ensure the room is extremely well-ventilated as bleach fumes are strong and problematic for respiratory issues. Never mix cleaning products.

After cleaning, the critical step is addressing the source of moisture. That window is not sufficient. Run the bathroom exhaust fan during and for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wipe down wet walls and floors with a squeegee. A small, portable dehumidifier can make a significant difference in pulling excess moisture from the air in a room that size.

If the mold covers an area larger than one square meter, has a persistent musty odor, or if the coughing persists after you've cleaned and improved ventilation, a professional inspection is warranted. They can identify if there's a hidden moisture issue within the walls and perform air or surface sampling to determine the spore count and species, which is important information for a family with health concerns. In many cases, the visible mold is just a symptom of a larger humidity problem that needs a science-driven solution.
