Is black mold causing our coughing and fatigue« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I'm starting to panic. I just pulled back the corner of the carpet in our master bedroom in Jumeirah and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold underneath, probably from a slow AC leak we never noticed. We've all been feeling more tired than usual and having headaches. Could this mold be the reason for our symptoms and how dangerous is it to have been living with it like this?

Yes, the black mold under your carpet is very likely contributing to your family's coughing, fatigue, and headaches. In Dubai's humid climate, mold thrives on the moisture from AC condensation leaks, which is a common issue in homes here. The constant coughing is a classic reaction to inhaling mold spores, while persistent fatigue and headaches can be systemic responses to the mycotoxins some molds produce.

What you've described is a serious situation that requires immediate action. Do not attempt to clean this yourself, as disturbing it will release a massive amount of spores into your air. The first step is to identify and fix the source of the moisture—likely the AC leak you mentioned—to prevent it from returning.

For a case of this magnitude, a professional inspection is essential. They will assess the full extent of the growth, which is often far greater than what is initially visible, and take air and surface samples. These samples should be analyzed by a microbiology lab to identify the specific type of mold, as "black mold" can refer to several species with varying health implications. This lab report is critical for understanding the risk and for guiding the proper, science-driven remediation process to ensure it is fully removed.

Until professionals can address it, restrict access to the room, keep the door closed, and if possible, increase ventilation by running an exhaust fan or opening windows away from the affected area to help reduce the spore concentration in your living space.
