Urgent: Black mold found, kids coughing. Treat professionally today?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I finally checked behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom and found a huge patch of black mold, probably from a slow AC leak. We’ve lived in this Jumeirah villa for years and just noticed it now. Given the humidity and my kids' health, is this something I need to get treated professionally like, today, or can it wait until the weekend?

Given the kids' coughing and the size of the patch, this is a health concern that warrants prompt professional assessment. While immediate evacuation isn't always necessary, you should restrict access to that room and avoid disturbing the mold yourself, as this can release a large number of spores into the air.

The combination of Dubai's high humidity and a chronic AC leak creates an ideal environment for mold, particularly the types that can cause persistent respiratory irritation. The fact that it's behind furniture suggests it's been growing undisturbed for a long time, likely meaning a more established colony. A professional inspection is strongly recommended because they can identify the exact species (not all black mold is the highly toxic Stachybotrys, but many species can cause issues) and, more importantly, locate the full extent of the moisture source and damage, which often spreads inside walls.

You can certainly call for assessments today; many providers offer emergency consultations for such cases. The remediation itself might be scheduled immediately or within a few days based on their findings. For a villa in Jumeirah, ensure any company you contact is familiar with Dubai Municipality guidelines for mold remediation and uses containment procedures to prevent cross-contamination. The priority is to fix the AC leak first; otherwise, the mold will simply return. A proper remediation will include removing the affected materials, HEPA vacuuming, and air scrubbing, followed by verification that the spore count in the room has returned to normal levels.
