Is mold in bedroom urgent for kids' health?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I finally pulled their clothes out of the bedroom cupboard in our Jumeirah villa. I found a bunch of black and green fuzzy spots spreading on the back wall and on some of my sweaters. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, but it seems to be getting worse quickly. How urgent is it to get this treated, and should I be keeping the kids out of that room right away?

Yes, this is urgent for your children's health and you should restrict their access to the room immediately. The combination of visible growth on walls and clothing, coupled with their persistent cough, strongly suggests the mold is already affecting their respiratory systems. Children are particularly vulnerable to mold exposure, which can cause or exacerbate coughing, wheezing, and allergy symptoms.
In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue in villas. The high humidity, especially during summer months, creates ideal conditions for mold growth inside closets and on exterior walls, which are often cooler due to year-round AC. The back wall of a closet is a prime location for condensation to form. The rapid spread you've noticed indicates an active moisture source, likely from a small plumbing leak within the wall or significant condensation. Do not attempt to clean this yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize the spores and worsen the air quality. Your immediate steps are to move the children to another room, remove the contaminated clothing (seal it in plastic bags to prevent spreading spores), and keep the bedroom door closed. You need a professional inspection to identify the exact species and, more critically, the source of the moisture. Remediation must address the root cause—the water intrusion—or the mold will return quickly. A proper assessment will include moisture mapping and air quality testing to determine the full scope. |
