Should I hire an expert for black mold or clean it myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an exterior wall. It wasn't there during the summer, but since the weather got more humid a few weeks ago, it's appeared and seems to be spreading. My wife has started getting bad allergies in the morning. Is this something I need to get an expert to handle immediately, or can I clean it myself with bleach this weekend?

Given the location on an exterior wall and its recent appearance coinciding with the rise in humidity, this is almost certainly a condensation issue, which is extremely common in Dubai's climate. The exterior wall is likely cooler than the room's dew point, causing moisture to condense inside the wall and providing the perfect environment for mold growth.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can clean it yourself. Bleach is not recommended as it only removes the surface colour and can release harmful fumes in an enclosed space. Instead, use a dedicated EPA-approved mold cleaner or a solution of distilled white vinegar and water. Scrub the area thoroughly, let it dry completely, and then address the moisture source. Improving air circulation in the closet and ensuring the exterior wall is properly insulated are critical steps.

However, given that the mold is spreading and your wife is experiencing allergy symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised. The visible patch is often just the tip of the iceberg; the growth within the wall cavity could be more extensive. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the full extent and identify the precise condensation source. They can also take a sample for lab analysis to confirm the species, as some types of black mold are more problematic than others. This is crucial for determining the correct remediation protocol and for your peace of mind regarding health impacts. For any recurring or spreading mold, especially with health symptoms present, expert assessment is the safest course of action.
