Black mold smell from AC: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a weird, damp smell, and I've just spotted a patch of black spots in the corner behind my bedroom wardrobe in Silicon Oasis. It's been getting worse since the weather got more humid a few weeks ago. Is this something I can clean with bleach myself, or do I need to call a professional company to check it out?

The damp smell and visible black spots strongly suggest active mold growth, which is common in Dubai's humid climate when condensation forms in AC units and poorly ventilated areas. Bleach is not recommended for porous surfaces like drywall or wood, as it only removes surface discoloration without addressing the root moisture problem or the mold structure beneath.

For the AC unit, a DIY clean is insufficient if mold is inside the ductwork or evaporation coils. The smell indicates contamination beyond the visible parts. For the wall patch, the location behind a wardrobe suggests a potential condensation cold spot or a hidden leak. Scrubbing it yourself can aerosolize spores, spreading the problem.

In the UAE, professional assessment is advised for health and property integrity. A proper inspection identifies the moisture source—often condensation from AC ducts, a small leak, or rising damp—and measures spore levels in the air. Remediation involves containing the area, removing contaminated materials, and using HEPA filtration, followed by verification testing. Companies with their own microbiology labs can provide culture-based identification, which is critical since not all black-colored mold is the toxic Stachybotrys, but accurate identification informs the correct safety protocol.

Given the symptoms and Silicon Oasis's building styles, this likely requires a professional to prevent recurrence and ensure it's resolved safely.
