How to safely remove black mold in Dubai with baby?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoe boxes. It must have been growing slowly because the room has felt damp for a while, but I only spotted it today while cleaning. I'm really worried about it spreading, especially with the baby sleeping in the next room. What's the most effective way to safely remove this myself, or should I call a professional company here in Dubai right away?

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can attempt removal yourself. First, isolate the area by closing the closet door and covering the gap with plastic sheeting to contain spores. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. The high humidity here means the root cause is likely condensation from your AC or a small, unseen leak.

Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water or a diluted bleach solution (4 parts water to 1 part bleach) and scrub the area thoroughly. Do not mix vinegar and bleach. After scrubbing, allow the area to dry completely using a fan; this is critical in Dubai's climate to prevent immediate regrowth. Discard any porous materials like the cardboard shoe boxes that were in direct contact with the mold.

However, with a baby in the adjacent room, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. The visible patch is often just the surface manifestation of a larger issue within the wall cavity, especially if the room has felt damp. Spores can become airborne during DIY cleaning. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and borescopes to check inside the wall for hidden growth and identify the precise moisture source, which is essential for a permanent solution. They can also perform air quality testing to ensure spores have not spread to other areas, including the nursery. For health peace of mind, this is the most effective course of action.
