Is black shower grout an urgent professional issue?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has started turning black, and it’s been spreading over the last month. I live in a villa in Jumeirah Park, and the bathroom has no window, so it’s always a bit humid. My main concern is whether this is something I need to call a professional to handle immediately this week, or if it’s okay to just scrub it with bleach this weekend and keep an eye on it?

Black shower grout is almost certainly mold, and in Dubai's climate, it's a common but not always urgent issue. The lack of ventilation and constant high humidity create a perfect environment for it to thrive.
For a small, surface-level area, a thorough scrub with a dedicated mold-killing cleaner (not just bleach, which often only bleaches the color) can be effective. Ensure you scrub deeply into the porous grout and dry the area completely with a fan afterward. The urgency depends on two factors: the extent and the underlying cause. If the black discoloration wipes away easily, it's likely surface mold. If it's deeply rooted, reappears quickly after cleaning, or if you notice a musty smell, there could be a moisture problem behind the tiles. In villas, persistent bathroom mold can sometimes indicate a larger humidity issue in the home. If cleaning doesn't resolve it, or if the area is larger than a square foot, a professional inspection is wise to rule out hidden condensation or a leak. They can perform a moisture reading on the walls to see if water has penetrated behind the tiles, which is a more serious problem requiring remediation. For now, a deep clean is a good first step, but be prepared to seek an assessment if it returns. |
