Should I worry about black mold from my AC in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind the clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside and the room always feels a bit damp. What’s the best way to get this professionally treated here in Dubai, and should I be worried about my AC unit causing this?

Black mold in your AC unit is a legitimate concern in Dubai's climate, but the risk depends on its location. Mold inside the AC's evaporator coil or ductwork can circulate spores throughout your home, potentially causing irritation like sneezing, congestion, or worsened allergies, particularly for those with respiratory conditions. However, visible mold on an external vent or grille is less likely to be a major dispersal point.

Your situation—a damp closet on an exterior wall—points to a different, yet common, issue here: condensation and hidden leaks. The constant switching between AC-cooled interiors and Dubai's intense outdoor heat and humidity creates perfect conditions for condensation within partition walls. This moisture, often from a small gap in external wall sealing or an underlying plumbing leak, fuels mold growth. Your AC may be contributing by creating the cold surface for condensation to form, but it is unlikely the primary source.

For this, a professional inspection is advised to identify the moisture source. Remediation involves fixing the leak or improving sealing, then properly treating the affected wall cavity. Simply cleaning the visible patch often fails as the mold regrows from the hidden moisture behind it. Look for providers who use moisture meters and thermal cameras to pinpoint the issue and can provide a post-remediation verification report. This approach is more effective than just servicing the AC unit, though ensuring your AC drain line is not clogged and is properly discharging water is also a good preventative measure.
