How to safely remove black mold in my apartment?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower wall meets the ceiling. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and I think the steam from our showers has finally gotten trapped up there. What is the most effective way for a tenant like me to safely remove this myself, and should I be notifying my building management about it?

Black mold in bathrooms is common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from showers. For a small patch, you can safely handle it yourself. First, ensure the area is well-ventilated by opening a window or running the bathroom exhaust fan.

Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and can push spores into the air. Instead, use a dedicated EPA-approved mold cleaner or a simple solution of distilled white vinegar. Spray it on the area, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff-bristled brush. Wipe the area clean and dry it thoroughly with a fan.

Since you're a tenant in a Jumeirah apartment, you must notify your building management in writing. Under typical tenancy agreements and Dubai Municipality guidelines, the structural integrity of the building is the landlord's responsibility. They need to investigate and address the root cause, which is often hidden condensation within the ceiling void or a lack of proper ventilation. This prevents it from recurring after you clean the visible growth.

If the mold patch is larger than one square meter, returns quickly after cleaning, or you notice a musty odor permeating the room, a professional inspection is recommended to assess for hidden growth within walls or ceiling spaces.
