Can we remove bedroom mold ourselves with a baby?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading along the corner where the bedroom wall meets the ceiling, probably from a slow AC leak. My husband thinks we can just spray it with bleach ourselves, but I'm worried about it spreading through the air since our baby sleeps in here. Is this something we can safely handle on our own, or should we call a professional cleaning company?

With a baby in the home, DIY removal is not recommended. The primary risk isn't the cleaning itself but the significant chance of aerosolizing spores during the process, which can spread contamination and be inhaled.
In Dubai's humid climate, what you see is often just the surface growth; the actual moisture source, like a small AC condensate leak inside the wall, is usually hidden. Bleach only removes surface discoloration on non-porous materials and does not address the root moisture problem or kill the organism on porous surfaces like drywall. The mold will almost certainly return. For a situation involving an infant and a recurring leak, a professional assessment is the safest course. They will use containment barriers and HEPA filtration during remediation to prevent cross-contamination and can use specialized equipment to identify the exact moisture source. Verifiable post-remediation testing, not just a visual inspection, is what confirms the environment is safe for a child to sleep in again. |
