Could mold in our Bur Dubai home cause kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since we got back from the summer break, and I’ve just spotted a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading from behind the wardrobe in their bedroom. We’re in an older building in Bur Dubai and the humidity has been awful these past few weeks. Could this mold be the cause of their cough, and who should I call to get it properly removed?

Yes, the black mold behind the wardrobe is a very likely cause of the persistent cough. In Dubai's high humidity, especially in older Bur Dubai buildings, mold thrives on condensation and can release spores that irritate the respiratory system. Children are particularly susceptible, often reacting with coughing, congestion, and worsened allergy symptoms.

For a confirmed diagnosis, a professional inspection is needed. They can identify the mold species—while often just an irritant, some types require more careful handling. The underlying moisture source, likely condensation from the exterior wall or a hidden leak, must be found and fixed; otherwise, the mold will return quickly after cleaning.

Do not attempt to remove significant black mold yourself. Disturbing it without proper containment spreads spores throughout your home. Look for a remediation provider that uses industry-standard protocols like IICRC S520, which includes isolating the area with negative air pressure and using HEPA filtration. They should also provide before-and-after testing from an independent lab to verify the air quality is safe, as this is a standard expectation for professional work in the UAE.
