Could AC mold cause my sinus issues and headaches?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making this weird damp smell for the last couple of months, and now I’m waking up with a stuffy nose and a sore throat every single day. I just pulled the filter out and the back of it is covered in black and greenish fuzzy spots. Could this mold in the AC unit be causing my constant sinus issues and headaches?

Yes, the mold in your AC unit is very likely the cause of your sinus issues and headaches. The damp smell is a classic sign of microbial growth, and the symptoms you're experiencing—waking up with a stuffy nose and sore throat—are common reactions to inhaling mold spores circulated directly from your air conditioning system.

In Dubai's climate, this is a frequent issue. The high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for condensation inside the units, which leads to mold growth if not properly managed. The filter you described, covered in black and greenish fuzzy spots, is a clear visual indicator that the entire internal evaporator coil and drip pan are probably contaminated.

For immediate relief, you can start by replacing that filter with a new one. However, this only addresses the surface problem. The mold you see is just a fraction of what's growing inside the unit. A thorough cleaning of the entire system by a professional is necessary to stop the spore circulation. In many cases, a simple chemical spray is insufficient; the system needs a deep clean that physically removes the biomass.

Given your persistent symptoms, I would strongly recommend a professional inspection and cleaning. Look for a provider that can offer before-and-after testing to verify the contamination is gone. For cases like yours in JVC, where units often run continuously, ensuring the system is completely clean is the only way to resolve the health symptoms effectively.
