Removing bathroom black mold: call management or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the bathroom wall meets the ceiling in our Marina apartment. It's right above the shower and gets steamy every day. What's the most effective way to get rid of this safely, and should I be calling my building management first or just handle it myself?

For a small patch in a rental apartment, you can often handle this yourself safely. The key is addressing the moisture source first—this is almost always due to steam from the shower condensing on the cooler ceiling surface, a very common issue in Dubai's climate.

Start by scrubbing the area with a dedicated mold remover or a solution of white vinegar or diluted bleach. Always wear an N95 mask and gloves to avoid inhaling spores. After cleaning, the most critical step is to prevent its return. Run the bathroom's exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and regularly wipe down wet surfaces.

You should notify your building management in writing. Under Dubai regulations, they are typically responsible for the building's structure and envelope. Informing them creates a record in case the issue is more widespread, like a leak from another apartment or inadequate insulation in the ceiling void.

If the mold returns quickly after a thorough cleaning, covers an area larger than one square meter, or you notice a persistent musty odor, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use moisture meters and lab testing to determine if there's a hidden problem that DIY cleaning can't solve.
