How urgently should I treat large black mold?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our sofa in the living room of our Jumeirah villa has a large patch of black mold that’s been slowly growing since the last heavy rains. It’s spreading up towards the ceiling and the room has started to smell really damp and earthy. How urgently do I need to get this professionally treated before it becomes a major health or structural problem?

Treat this with high urgency. In Dubai's climate, a large, spreading patch of black mold indicates an active moisture source, likely from a post-rain leak or severe condensation within the wall cavity. The damp smell confirms it is actively growing and releasing spores into your living space.

For health, the risk is significant. Prolonged exposure to high concentrations of mold spores can trigger severe allergic reactions, asthma attacks, and respiratory irritation, particularly for children, elderly, or immunocompromised individuals. Structurally, mold this advanced can degrade drywall and compromise underlying materials if the water source remains.

You need a professional inspection immediately to identify and stop the moisture intrusion. In villas, this often stems from hidden roof leaks, cracked exterior render, or faulty external waterproofing that occurred during the rains. Simply cleaning the visible mold is useless if the water entry point isn't sealed.

A proper remediation will involve isolating the area, removing affected porous materials like drywall and insulation, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment of the wall cavity. Given the size and spread you describe, this is not a DIY project. The remediation company should provide before-and-after lab testing to verify the spore count in the room has returned to a normal baseline.
