Black mold in Jumeirah Village Circle apartment: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been leaking a bit, and now I've found a patch of black mold behind the bedroom wardrobe. It's been getting worse over the last couple of weeks since the weather got more humid. I'm worried about it spreading but have no idea what this costs to fix here. Should I try to handle this myself with bleach, or is it a job for a professional mold removal company, and what's a rough price I should expect for a small room?

The high humidity in Dubai, especially during summer, creates ideal conditions for mold growth, particularly from AC condensation leaks like yours. For a patch behind a wardrobe, the first step is to stop the moisture source—get the AC leak repaired immediately.

Small surface mold (under 1 square meter) can sometimes be handled with a DIY approach. Use a solution of detergent and water, not bleach, as bleach doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage porous materials. Scrub the area, dry it completely, and ensure excellent ventilation. However, if the mold is black and has been growing for weeks, it may have penetrated the wall or backing material, which is beyond surface cleaning.

Given the location (behind furniture) and the persistent humidity, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They can determine if the drywall or backing board needs replacement to prevent spores from spreading through your apartment's air. In JVC apartments, cross-contamination to other units is also a consideration.

Professional remediation involves containment of the area, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment to prevent recurrence. The cost is not fixed; it depends entirely on the extent of the infestation discovered once the area is opened up. For a small, contained job, you can expect a range from a few hundred to over a thousand dirhams. Always request a detailed assessment and quote that includes post-remediation verification to ensure the job is done to Dubai Municipality public health standards.
