How to remove damp smell from closet and prevent mold?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in my Jumeirah apartment has started to get a really strong, damp smell, especially on the leather bags and shoes I stored over the summer. I think it might be mold, but I can't see any obvious black spots yet. What's the best way to completely get rid of the smell and prevent this from happening again when I close up the closet for the season?

That damp smell is almost certainly microbial growth, a common issue in Dubai's climate. Leather items are particularly vulnerable as they absorb moisture and provide organic material for mold to feed on.

First, remove all items from the closet. Wipe down every surface with a solution of white vinegar and water (1:1 ratio), which is effective against many odor-causing microbes. For the leather goods, wipe them down with a dedicated leather cleaner and conditioner, then allow them to air dry completely away from direct sunlight or AC vents before even considering returning them to storage.

To prevent recurrence, you must control humidity. This is the single most important step. Install a small, rechargeable desiccant dehumidifier inside the closet; these are widely available and ideal for enclosed spaces. Never store leather items in airtight containers or plastic bags, as this traps moisture. Use fabric garment bags instead. Leave the closet door ajar periodically to allow air circulation.

For long-term prevention, identify the moisture source. In Jumeirah apartments, this is often condensation from the external wall the closet is built against, especially if the AC is set too high and the unit isn't running consistently. Ensure your AC is properly serviced and set to maintain a relative humidity below 60%. If the smell persists after cleaning or you begin to see visible growth, a professional inspection with air and surface sampling can identify the specific species and guide targeted remediation.
