To prevent recurrence, you must control humidity. This is the single most important step. Never store leather items in airtight containers or plastic bags, as this traps moisture. Use fabric garment bags instead. Leave the closet door ajar periodically to allow air circulation.

For long-term prevention, identify the moisture source.
