Is mold on curtains causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold growing on the back of our bedroom curtains. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, but it's spread quite a bit since last month's humidity. Is this something I need to call a specialist about immediately, or can it wait until next week?

Yes, mold on curtains can absolutely cause coughing in children. Their smaller airways are more sensitive to mold spores, which become airborne when disturbed by air movement from AC units or fans. The recent high humidity has created ideal conditions for rapid mold growth on fabric surfaces like curtains.

In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue. The condensation from AC units cooling humid air creates a damp environment, particularly on exterior walls and behind curtains where airflow is restricted. The mold you see is likely just the visible colony—there are probably spores embedded deeper in the fabric and possibly on the wall behind it.

You should address this promptly. For your children's health, I would not recommend waiting. Start by carefully removing the curtains to avoid spreading spores. Wash them at a high temperature if the fabric allows, or consider replacing them if the mold growth is extensive. Wipe down the wall behind with a diluted vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution.

However, since the coughing has already started, a specialist inspection is wise. They can perform an air quality test to identify the spore types and concentration levels in the bedroom. This is important because the mold on the curtain might be a symptom of a broader humidity issue in the room. A professional assessment will determine if remediation is needed and help identify the moisture source to prevent rapid regrowth.
