How to treat black mold behind wardrobe and prevent recurrence?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived in this Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed it when we moved the furniture to rearrange the room. What's the best way to treat this ourselves to make sure it doesn't come back, and should we be worried about it spreading inside the walls?

Black mold behind furniture is common in Dubai villas due to high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. The immediate coughing in your kids is a legitimate concern, as this exposure often causes respiratory irritation.
For a small, visible patch (less than 1 square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). Let the area dry completely. However, simply cleaning the surface is often insufficient. The mold's root system can penetrate porous materials like drywall or plaster. If the wall feels soft or the staining is deep, the material is likely compromised and needs replacement. Preventing recurrence is critical. Mold grew there because of stagnant, humid air. The wardrobe was trapping moisture against the wall. Keep furniture at least a few inches away from walls to allow air circulation. Use a dehumidifier in the room, aiming to keep relative humidity below 50%. Identify and fix the moisture source; it could be condensation from an AC vent, a minor plumbing leak in the wall, or water ingress from the exterior. Given the symptoms in your children and the likelihood the mold has spread inside the wall cavity, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use borescopes to check inside walls and moisture meters to find hidden dampness. DIY cleaning addresses the surface symptom but not the underlying cause, which in many Dubai homes requires proper remediation to ensure it doesn't return and impact your family's health. |
