Found black mold in bedroom closet, DIY or call maintenance?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It must have been there a while because the wall feels slightly damp and the room has had a weird stale smell for months that I couldn't place. What's the most effective way to get rid of it myself, or should I call my building's maintenance immediately?

Given the damp wall and persistent stale smell, this is likely a serious moisture issue, not just surface mold. In Dubai's climate, hidden condensation or a slow leak from an AC drain line or pipe in the wall is a common cause.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can carefully clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). However, this only addresses the visible growth, not the underlying moisture source.

Since the wall is damp, the moisture is likely coming from within the building envelope. DIY cleaning will be temporary, as the mold will return without fixing the root cause. Your building's maintenance team should be called immediately. They are responsible for investigating and repairing structural leaks, faulty AC condensation drainage, or insulation issues that cause this dampness. Dubai's high humidity means these problems can recur quickly if not properly resolved.

For health safety and to ensure the leak is found, a professional inspection is advised after maintenance addresses the moisture. They can perform air and surface tests to confirm the mold is fully remediated and the spore count is back to a safe level, which is particularly important given the duration of the issue.
