How to permanently remove mold from exterior villa wall?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our sofa in the living room has started showing these blackish-green spots, and it's been getting worse since the weather changed last month. We're in a villa in Mirdif, and this is the wall that faces the outside. I'm really worried it's going to spread and affect our health. What's the most effective way to get rid of this mold for good and what should we do to stop it from coming back?

That pattern suggests a condensation issue, common on exterior walls in Dubai villas. The wall is colder than the indoor air, causing moisture to condense behind your sofa where airflow is restricted. This dampness allows mold to grow.

For permanent removal, surface cleaning is not enough. The wall must be completely dried and the root cause addressed. Start by moving the sofa away to allow the wall to breathe. Use a dehumidifier in the room for several days to draw out the moisture. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Wipe the affected area with a mixture of detergent and water; avoid bleach as it doesn't prevent regrowth.

The key to stopping its return is addressing the thermal bridge. An exterior wall in direct sun can get very hot, while your AC cools the interior, creating a significant temperature differential. The solution is often improving the wall's insulation or ensuring your AC isn't set so cold that it exacerbates the condensation. For a lasting fix, a professional assessment is recommended to identify the precise cause and propose solutions like applying a thermal insulating layer or a moisture-resistant coating. In many Mirdif villas, this is the only way to break the cycle permanently.
