Dehumidifier or moisture boxes for damp closet smell?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in my Marina apartment has started to get a faint damp smell, especially on the leather bags and shoes I keep in there. I first noticed it a couple of weeks ago when the humidity really spiked. I’m worried it’s the beginning of a mold problem. What’s the most effective way to control moisture in a closed closet here, should I get a dehumidifier or those moisture absorber boxes?

A dehumidifier is the more effective solution for a persistent damp smell in a Dubai closet. Moisture absorber boxes are a temporary fix for small, enclosed spaces like a single drawer, but they saturate quickly in our high humidity and cannot handle the volume of moist air that seeps into a closet, especially in a Marina apartment where humidity can exceed 80%.

The core issue is likely condensation from the temperature differential between your air-conditioned room and the warmer, stagnant air inside the closed closet. This creates the perfect damp environment for mold spores, which are always present, to begin colonizing. That faint smell is often the first sign of microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs), a metabolic byproduct of active mold growth.

Start by emptying the closet completely. Inspect the walls, ceiling, and especially the back wall; it might be an exterior wall where condensation forms. Wipe all surfaces with a dilute vinegar solution. For your leather goods, wipe them down with a suitable leather cleaner and allow them to dry thoroughly in a well-ventilated area before considering returning them.

For control, a compact, electric dehumidifier designed for small rooms or closets is your best investment. It will actively pull liters of moisture from the air daily. Ensure it has a drain hose or a large enough tank that you can empty regularly. Also, leave the closet door ajar for at least an hour each day to allow air circulation from your room's AC, which is a dehumidifier itself.

If the smell persists after cleaning and humidity control, or if you see any speckling, a professional inspection with air and surface sampling is recommended. This identifies the species and extent of growth, as some molds common here can cause significant damage to belongings and indoor air quality.
