Is mold causing my kids' constant coughing?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and we can't figure out why. I finally pulled out the sofa in our living room to look behind it and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading up the wall, probably from a hidden AC leak. We've lived in this Jumeirah villa for years and never had this issue until now. Could this mold be the reason for their constant cold-like symptoms and should I be panicking about their health?

Yes, the black mold you found is very likely the cause of your children's persistent coughing. In Dubai's humid climate, hidden condensation from AC units is a common source for this type of growth. The mold releases microscopic spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) into the air, which are direct respiratory irritants. For children, whose airways are smaller and more sensitive, this constant exposure often manifests as coughing, congestion, and cold-like symptoms that don't resolve.

You should address this with caution, but panic is unnecessary. The immediate step is to isolate the area; keep the children out of the room and close the door to prevent spore circulation. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as disturbing it will aerosolize a high concentration of spores, potentially worsening the problem and your children's symptoms.

This situation requires professional assessment. In the UAE, a proper mold inspection involves more than a visual check; it includes moisture mapping to find the exact source of the water intrusion (like that AC leak) and air or surface sampling to identify the species. This is critical because while all mold can cause irritation, certain species require more specific containment protocols during remediation. A reputable company will provide a detailed protocol and, most importantly, verifiable before-and-after lab results to confirm the air quality is safe. Once the source is fixed and the mold is professionally remediated, you should see a significant improvement in your children's respiratory symptoms.
