Black bathroom grout mold: DIY clean or hire pro in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom. It's worse in the corner behind the toilet where it's a bit damp. I'm worried it's mold, especially with the humidity lately. Should I just try to clean it myself with bleach, or is this something I need to hire a professional for in Dubai, and what would that roughly cost?

Small black spots in bathroom grout are common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from showers. For a small, surface-level area (less than a square foot), a DIY approach is often sufficient.
Start by scrubbing the affected grout with a dedicated grout brush and a paste of baking soda and water. For stubborn spots, a diluted vinegar solution or a commercial hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner can be effective; avoid mixing chemicals. Bleach can remove the visible colour but often doesn't kill the root structure beneath the surface, leading to quick regrowth. The key is to reduce the moisture. Run your bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet tiles and glass with a squeegee. If the mould has penetrated deep into the grout or the porous material behind it, or if it covers a large area (several square feet), scrubbing will only be temporary. This is common in corners with persistent dampness. A professional assessment is recommended in these cases to determine if the grout needs resealing or the underlying wall requires remediation to prevent structural issues and potential health effects from prolonged spore exposure. The cost for professional remediation varies significantly based on the extent of the problem and whether underlying damage is found; it's best to request an on-site assessment for an accurate scope and quote. |
