Black shower mold keeps returning, DIY or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has been getting these black spots for a couple of months now, and no matter how much I scrub with bleach, it just comes back a week later. We live in an older building in Bur Dubai and the bathroom has no window, so it’s always a bit humid. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger product, or should I just call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

That black mold in shower grout is extremely common in Dubai due to the high humidity and lack of ventilation in many bathrooms. Bleach only removes the surface discoloration; it doesn't kill the root structure (hyphae) penetrating the porous grout, which is why it returns so quickly.
For a small, recurring patch, you can try a dedicated fungicidal cleaner, not just bleach. Look for one with specific anti-mold agents. Scrub thoroughly and, crucially, address the moisture source. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet surfaces to speed up drying. However, given your description—an older building in Bur Dubai, persistent return, and a consistently humid environment—the moisture issue is likely systemic. The mold may have spread behind the tiles or into the wall substrate, which is far beyond a surface cleaning. In such cases, a professional assessment is warranted to identify the full extent and source of the moisture. They use tools like moisture meters and borescopes to see behind walls without unnecessary demolition. A reputable remediation company will not just clean; they will diagnose why it's happening and provide a solution to prevent recurrence, which is the only way to solve a persistent problem in our climate. |
