How to treat bedroom mold nad prevent dampness?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has been feeling really damp lately, and I just found a patch of black, speckled mold in the corner behind the wardrobe. We run the AC constantly, but the room never feels properly dry, especially after our showers. What's the most effective way to treat this existing mold and what kind of dehumidifier or moisture absorber would you recommend for a large bedroom to stop it from coming back?

First, address the existing mold safely. Do not disturb it with bleach or simple wiping, as this can aerosolize spores. For a small patch (under one square meter), use a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, applying it gently and allowing it to soak. Always wear an N95 mask and gloves. However, since it's behind furniture and the room has persistent dampness, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess hidden growth within walls or under flooring, which is common in Dubai villas.

The dampness is likely due to a combination of high ambient humidity and condensation from your AC system. The AC may be set too cold, causing the unit to cycle off before it adequately removes moisture from the air. Try raising the thermostat a few degrees to ensure it runs long enough to dehumidify. Also, check that the AC drain line is not clogged, as a blocked line can cause water to leak and create humidity.

For a large bedroom, a refrigerant (compressor) dehumidifier is far more effective than a desiccant moisture absorber, which is better suited for small, enclosed spaces like wardrobes. Look for a unit with a capacity of at least 20-30 liters per day to handle the humid Dubai climate. Ensure it has a continuous drainage option so you don't have to empty the tank constantly.

After remediation, improving air circulation is key to prevention. Keep the wardrobe slightly away from the wall and avoid overfilling it. Use exhaust fans during and for at least 30 minutes after showers to remove steam directly. A lab-based air or surface sample can identify the mold type and confirm the space is safe after cleaning, which is a standard part of a professional remediation process.
