How to remove and prevent mold in Dubai home?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoes. It’s been really humid lately and I’m worried it’s spreading. What’s the most effective way for a homeowner here to safely clean this and stop it from coming back?

First, address the moisture source. In Dubai's high humidity, mold grows from trapped moisture and poor air circulation. Your closet corner likely has condensation from the AC's cold wall meeting the humid air. Move items away to let the wall breathe.

For cleaning small patches, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Use a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water or a diluted bleach solution (check manufacturer guidelines for the surface). Scrub the area, let it sit for 10 minutes, then wipe dry. Never mix cleaning chemicals.

Preventing its return is key. Ensure your AC is set to maintain humidity below 60%. Use a dehumidifier or a dedicated closet dehumidifying unit. Improve air flow by leaving closet doors ajar and not overpacking them. Insulating the cold wall behind the mold patch can prevent future condensation.

For recurring or large patches (over one square meter), or if you experience persistent musty odors or health symptoms, a professional inspection is advised. They can identify hidden moisture sources and the mold species. Lab testing can confirm if it's Stachybotrys (the "black mold" of concern) or a more common, less hazardous type. Remediation in the UAE should follow DM guidelines, which often involve containment and HEPA filtration to prevent spore dispersal during cleaning.
