Should we remove black mold ourselves or call management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and I’m worried it might be spreading because my allergies have been terrible this month. What’s the best way to handle this ourselves, or should I call the building management first?

The first step is to notify your building management in writing. In Dubai, landlords and property managers are typically responsible for addressing the structural cause of mold, which is often a hidden water leak or inadequate insulation in an exterior wall. They should send a maintenance team to investigate the source of the moisture.
For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself with a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water, or a diluted bleach solution (wear gloves, a mask, and ensure ventilation). However, since this is on an exterior wall and your allergies are acting up, the visible mold is likely just the tip of the iceberg. Spores have probably spread inside the wall cavity. DIY cleaning only addresses the surface and the underlying moisture problem will cause it to return. The Dubai climate, with its high humidity and constant AC use, creates perfect conditions for mold to regrow quickly if the root cause isn't fixed. A professional inspection is recommended to identify the exact moisture source and the full extent of the growth. They can use moisture meters and borescopes to see inside the wall and provide a remediation plan. This is crucial for your health, as the ongoing allergen exposure will likely continue otherwise. |
