Should we handle black mold immediately or can it wait?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It’s been humid lately and the room doesn't get much airflow. My wife has been waking up with a stuffy nose and itchy eyes for the past week. Is this something I need to call a professional to handle immediately this weekend, or can it wait until next month?

Black mold in a bedroom, especially with health symptoms like a stuffy nose and itchy eyes, should be addressed immediately. The high humidity we've been experiencing in Dubai creates ideal conditions for mold growth, particularly in low-airflow areas like closets. Waiting allows the colony to release more spores into your sleeping environment, potentially worsening symptoms.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can often handle it yourself with proper precautions. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Move the storage boxes to improve airflow. Clean the area with a mixture of detergent and water, or a vinegar solution, and ensure it is completely dried. However, since it was hidden and your wife is symptomatic, the visible patch might only be part of the issue. Mold can grow behind baseboards or into the wall itself.

Given the symptoms and the climate, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters and borescopes to check for hidden moisture and growth. In Dubai, remediation standards focus on containment to prevent spore spread and identifying the moisture source—often condensation from AC ducts or a small leak. A proper assessment will determine if this is a surface issue or requires deeper remediation to safeguard your indoor air quality and health.
