Could black mold be causing our sickness?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I’ve been getting terrible headaches, and I just found patches of black, fuzzy stuff behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived in this Jumeirah villa for 5 years and it’s never been an issue until after the heavy rains we had. Is this black mold and could it be the reason we’re all feeling so sick?

Yes, black mold could very well be the cause of your family's persistent coughing and headaches, especially given the recent heavy rains and your discovery of the growth. The symptoms you describe—respiratory irritation and headaches—are commonly associated with prolonged exposure to mold spores in damp indoor environments.

In Dubai's climate, the combination of high humidity and year-round AC use creates ideal conditions for mold. AC systems can spread spores throughout a villa, and the heavy rains likely caused a hidden moisture intrusion, perhaps in a wall cavity, which then manifested behind the wardrobe. This is a frequent issue in villas here after significant rainfall.

For your family's health, this requires immediate action. Do not attempt to clean significant black mold growth yourself, as disturbing it releases a high concentration of spores. The first step is a professional inspection to identify the moisture source and the full extent of the contamination. They will also take samples for lab analysis to confirm the mold type, as "black mold" is a broad term and identification is key to understanding the health risk.

Once the source is repaired and the extent is known, a proper remediation plan can be executed to contain and remove the mold safely. For verification, always request documented before-and-after air quality test results from an independent lab to confirm the environment is safe. Given the symptoms, a professional assessment is strongly recommended.
