How to treat and prevent mold in JVC bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Jumeirah Village Circle villa has been feeling really damp lately, and I just found a patch of black, speckled stuff in the corner behind our wardrobe. We run the AC constantly, but the room never feels truly dry, especially after showering. What's the most effective way to treat this existing mold and what can I do to stop it from coming back for good?

The dampness and black speckled growth are classic signs of condensation-related mold, a very common issue in JVC villas due to our high humidity and constant AC use. The AC cools the air but may not be dehumidifying it effectively, especially if the unit is undersized or not maintained.

For the existing patch, first address the moisture source. Move the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation. To treat it, wear a mask and gloves. Wipe the area with a diluted detergent solution or a dedicated mold remover, but avoid bleach as it only removes the colour and can damage porous materials. For porous surfaces like drywall, cutting out and replacing the affected section is often necessary.

Preventing its return requires controlling humidity. Ensure your AC is set to a "dry" or low fan mode to enhance dehumidification. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after showering. A standalone dehumidifier in the bedroom is one of the most effective solutions for persistently damp rooms. Check for any hidden leaks from pipes or windows, which are a frequent culprit.

For a recurring or large-scale problem, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the specific mold type and all moisture sources. In Dubai, remediation should follow standards like the IICRC S520, which includes containment and air scrubbing to prevent spore spread. A company with its own microbiology lab can provide a culture to confirm the species, which is crucial for assessing risk and verifying that remediation was successful.
