How to treat black mold in Dubai villa myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for two years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It must have been there a while, but I only found it today while doing a deep clean. I'm really worried about it spreading, especially with the humidity starting to creep up again. What is the most effective way to treat this myself, and should I be calling a professional company here in Dubai for something like this?

Black mold in a Dubai villa closet is a common issue driven by our high humidity and condensation from AC units. The first step is to identify and stop the moisture source. Check for a leaking AC drain pipe in the ceiling void above the closet or condensation buildup from the cold wall meeting humid air.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can treat it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Mix a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle. Spray the area thoroughly, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush. Wipe clean with a damp cloth and allow it to dry completely. Avoid using bleach, as it only removes the surface color and does not address the root moisture problem.

However, given that the mold was hidden and has likely been present for a while, a DIY cleanup may only be a temporary fix. The mold you see is just the fruiting body; the root structure (mycelium) can penetrate porous materials like drywall and plaster. If the wall feels soft or the stain doesn't lift, the material is likely compromised.

For any recurring mold or a patch larger than one square foot, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden source of water intrusion that you can't see. In many cases, the wall may need to be opened to properly dry the cavity and remove contaminated materials. A reputable company will provide before-and-after lab testing to verify the species and confirm the spore count has returned to a normal level, which is the only way to be sure the problem is resolved.
