Black mold causing kids' cough: remove safely and see doctor?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I’ve just discovered patches of black mold behind the toilet and under the sink in our master bathroom. We live in a Jumeirah Village Circle villa and I know the humidity has been terrible lately. What’s the fastest and safest way to get rid of this, and should I be taking them to a doctor for these specific symptoms?

Black mold exposure can indeed cause persistent coughing, congestion, and throat irritation, especially in children. A visit to a pediatrician is strongly recommended to address their specific symptoms and rule out other causes.

For safe removal in a high-humidity climate like Dubai, start by isolating the area. Keep the bathroom door closed and the window open during cleanup. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Scrub the patches with a mixture of detergent and water; avoid bleach as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can irritate airways. Thoroughly dry the surfaces with a fan afterward.

The key to preventing its return is controlling the humidity that fuels it. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wipe down wet walls and shower stalls. Consider using a portable dehumidifier in the bathroom, as villa AC systems often struggle with localized humidity. For extensive growth, or if it returns quickly, a professional inspection can identify hidden moisture sources like a leaking pipe under the sink. In many cases, a lab test to confirm the mold type provides clarity on the necessary remediation steps.
