How to permanently remove mold from humid villa closet?« Back to Previous Page
|
My master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has started to get a faint damp smell, especially on the outer wall. I first noticed it a couple of weeks ago when the humidity really spiked, and now some of our leather bags and shoes have these faint white specks on them. We run the AC constantly but it doesn't seem to help this specific area. What's the most effective way to get rid of this mold for good and what can I do to stop it from coming back, especially with another humid season coming up?

The most effective approach starts with identifying the moisture source, which in Jumeirah villas is often a small leak in the plumbing or, more commonly, condensation from the AC system. The outer wall location suggests thermal bridging, where the wall is colder than the room, causing humid air to condense on it. Running the AC lowers overall humidity but can't address this localized cold spot.
For removal, first assess the extent. If the mold covers more than one square meter or is inside the wall, professional remediation is strongly advised to prevent aerosolizing spores throughout the home. For smaller, surface-level growth, wear an N95 mask and clean the area with a microfiber cloth and a solution of diluted detergent or vinegar. Avoid bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage surfaces. To stop it from returning, you must control the moisture. Improve air circulation in the closet by leaving doors open or using a small battery-operated dehumidifier or fan. Ensure your AC unit is serviced and draining properly, as a clogged drain line increases indoor humidity. For the wall itself, consider having a professional add insulation to prevent the cold surface that causes condensation. Store susceptible items like leather in sealed containers with desiccant packs during the humid summer months. A professional inspection can pinpoint the exact condensation source and recommend structural solutions. |
