Can I remove recurring closet mold myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some boxes. It's been extra humid lately and I'm worried it's spread behind the drywall. I tried wiping it with vinegar but it came back after a few days. Is this something I can handle myself with a proper cleaner from ACE, or should I just call a professional company for an inspection and what would that likely cost?

Recurring mold after a DIY clean indicates a persistent moisture source, which is common in Dubai's high humidity. For a small, surface-level patch, you can attempt a more thorough DIY approach. First, move everything out and use a proper fungicidal cleaner (not just vinegar, which often doesn't kill the root structure) from a hardware store. Scrub the area well and let it dry completely with a fan.

However, the fact it returned suggests the issue may be deeper. The mold is likely growing due to condensation from your AC system or a small, hidden leak. In villas, it's common for mold to spread inside wall cavities if the insulation is compromised or if there's a temperature differential creating constant condensation.

Given its location in a closet and its recurrence, a professional inspection is recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to detect hidden dampness within the wall without causing unnecessary damage. The cost for a basic inspection and assessment is typically reasonable, as it prevents a minor issue from becoming a major remediation project. They can identify if the problem is just surface condensation or something more systemic. For a confirmed, contained area, remediation might be a straightforward fix; for widespread hidden growth, it would be more involved. The key is getting a proper diagnosis first.
