How to treat black mold from damp AC wall in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed it when we moved the furniture to rearrange. The wall feels damp and cold to the touch, especially after running the AC all day. What's the best way to treat this ourselves to stop it coming back, and should I be worried about it being inside the AC ducts too?

Black mold on a damp wall is a clear sign of condensation from your AC unit, a very common issue in Dubai's climate. The constant cooling against the villa's warm exterior walls creates a cold surface where moisture from the humid air condenses, especially behind furniture that blocks airflow.

Your first step is safety. Do not disturb the mold by scrubbing it dry, as this releases spores. For a small patch (under one square meter), wear an N95 mask and gloves. Clean the area with a detergent solution, but the critical part is fixing the moisture source. You must improve air circulation behind the wardrobe and address the wall's condensation. Leaving a gap between the furniture and the wall is essential.

Given the symptoms you describe and the wall feeling cold and damp, the condensation issue is likely significant. This dampness can often penetrate the wall cavity. It is highly advisable to have a professional inspection to assess the wall's integrity and check the AC ducts. While not all black discoloration is the notorious Stachybotrys, persistent moisture and respiratory symptoms in children warrant a professional diagnosis to identify the species and the full extent of the problem, which often extends beyond what's visible. A proper assessment will determine if the AC system itself is contaminated and contributing to the spread of spores throughout the home.
