Is mold causing my kids' prolonged cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I’m starting to suspect it’s because of a mold issue. We’ve lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black spots behind the wardrobe in the master bedroom, which is right next to their room. With the humidity lately, I’m worried it’s spreading inside the walls. Is this something I need to get inspected immediately, or can it wait until the weekend?

Given the symptoms and the visible mold, yes, it is a strong possibility. In Dubai's high humidity, especially during summer and with recent weather, mold spores thrive and can easily become airborne from a source like behind a wardrobe. A persistent cough in children is a common reaction to mold exposure, as their respiratory systems are more sensitive.

You should treat this with urgency. A patch visible on one surface often indicates a larger, hidden problem within the wall cavity, particularly if the wardrobe was placed against a cold wall where condensation forms. This is not something to delay until the weekend, as the colony will continue to grow and release spores.

Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as disturbing it will aerosolize a high concentration of spores throughout the home, potentially worsening your children's symptoms. A professional inspection is needed to determine the full extent of the contamination, identify the moisture source, and provide a remediation plan. They will use tools like moisture meters and borescopes to see inside the walls without unnecessary demolition. The inspection itself should be a diagnostic process, not just a visual check, and any reputable provider will be able to explain their methodology clearly before starting.
