How to permanently remove and prevent closet mold in high humidity?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah has started growing black mold on the leather shoes and bags stored inside. It’s been getting worse since the humidity spiked a couple of months ago, and even though I’ve wiped it away, it keeps coming back. What is the most effective long-term solution to kill the mold for good and prevent it from returning in this specific high-humidity environment?

The recurring mold in your closet is a classic Dubai humidity issue, not just a surface problem. The mold you see is the symptom; the high moisture inside that wall cavity is the cause. A permanent fix requires addressing both.

First, stop wiping it. Disturbing mold without containment spreads its microscopic spores. For leather goods, a professional restoration service can properly clean and treat them to save your items.

The core issue is likely condensation forming on the cooler interior surface of that outside wall, especially with the constant AC use. The most effective long-term solution is a two-step process: remediation and prevention.

For remediation, the affected wall area needs professional inspection. The mold has likely penetrated the porous materials (drywall, insulation). Effective removal requires containment to prevent spore spread throughout your home, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment of the structure. DIY methods often fail because they don't address the root colony.

Prevention is critical. You must lower the relative humidity in that enclosed space. Install a battery-operated dehumidifier inside the closet; this is a very effective first step. Improve air circulation by leaving the closet door ajar periodically or installing a small vent. For a comprehensive solution, a professional assessment can identify if additional wall insulation or a positive air pressure system is needed to stop condensation from forming.

Since the problem is persistent and involves building materials, a certified mold inspection is recommended to assess the full extent and provide a targeted remediation plan, which is the only way to achieve a permanent result in our climate.
