Found black mold behind furniture; clean myself or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month, and I finally pulled their wooden toy chest away from the wall in our Khalifa City villa and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading behind it. We had that small leak from the AC condensation pipe during the last humidity spike and I guess it never properly dried out. What’s the safest way to clean this myself without putting my family at risk, or should I just call a professional company right away?

Black mold growth behind furniture from AC condensation leaks is a common issue in Dubai's high humidity. For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can clean it yourself safely. For anything larger, or if it has spread into drywall, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the full extent.

First, address the moisture source. The AC condensation line must be unclogged and the area thoroughly dried with a dehumidifier to prevent immediate regrowth. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses during cleanup. Isolate the area by closing the door and covering the AC vent to prevent spores from circulating.

Scrub the affected wall with a detergent solution. Avoid bleach, as it doesn't kill mold roots and can worsen indoor air quality. After cleaning, the wall must be completely dry. Discard any porous items like the toy chest if the mold has penetrated the wood, as it cannot be fully salvaged.

Given the persistent respiratory symptoms in your children, a professional assessment is prudent. They can perform air and surface sampling to identify the mold species and confirm the airborne spore count has returned to a safe level after cleanup, which is critical for health reassurance. Companies with their own microbiology labs can provide this diagnostic clarity.
