How to remove adn stop bathroom mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower door meets the tiled wall in our master bathroom. It’s been really humid lately in Dubai and I think the bathroom’s exhaust fan isn't strong enough. What’s the most effective way to clean this myself, and should I be worried about it spreading behind the tiles?

Bathroom mold in Dubai is extremely common due to the high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. For a small patch where the shower door meets the tile, you can manage it yourself.

Start by scrubbing the visible mold with a dedicated mold remover spray or a paste of baking soda and vinegar. For tougher cases, a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to ten parts water) is effective, but ensure the room is well-ventilated. After cleaning, dry the area thoroughly with a fan or dehumidifier.

To prevent it from returning, you must address the moisture. Run your bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. If it’s weak, consider upgrading it to a higher-capacity model. Wiping down wet walls and shower doors after use is one of the most effective habits. Keep the shower door slightly ajar to allow air circulation.

The concern about it spreading behind the tiles is valid. If the grout is cracked or the sealant has failed, moisture can seep in and create hidden mold growth. If the mold returns aggressively within a week or two despite thorough cleaning and moisture control, or if you notice a persistent musty smell, the issue may be deeper. In such cases, a professional inspection with a borescope can check behind tiles and inside walls without damage, as visual surface cleaning won't solve a concealed problem.
