How to remove and prevent closet mold from AC condensation?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in my Jumeirah apartment has started to get these black speckles on the back wall, and all my winter jackets inside smell really damp and musty. I think it might be because the AC vent blows cold air directly onto that wall, creating a lot of condensation. What’s the best way to clean this off and prevent the mold from coming back for good?

The black speckles are likely mold growth caused by condensation from your AC vent. This is common in Dubai where high humidity meets cold surfaces. First, address the moisture source. Redirect the vent airflow away from the wall using a deflector or adjust the louvers to prevent cold air from hitting it directly.

For cleaning, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Wipe the affected wall with a diluted white vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 1 part water) or a dedicated mold-cleaning product. Do not use bleach, as it doesn't kill the roots and can damage porous surfaces. Discard any items that are heavily contaminated or cannot be thoroughly cleaned.

To prevent recurrence, improve air circulation. Leave the closet door open periodically and consider a small desiccant dehumidifier or moisture absorber inside. For the musty smell on jackets, sun-drying them outside during the cooler hours can help, but professional fabric cleaning may be necessary if the odor persists.

If the mold covers an area larger than one square meter, returns after cleaning, or if you experience health symptoms, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use moisture meters to identify hidden dampness and air sampling to identify the spore types, which is crucial for effective remediation. In many cases, simply cleaning the visible mold without fixing the underlying condensation issue will result in it coming back.
