Black grout and ceiling spots: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has started turning black, and I just noticed a few small dark spots on the ceiling above it. It’s been like this for a couple of months but seems to be spreading slowly since the weather got more humid. Is this something I can tackle myself with a cleaning product from ACE Hardware, or do I need to call in a professional to check it out?

That black grout and ceiling spotting is a classic sign of a mold issue, and it's very common here due to our high humidity and condensation from constant AC use.

For a small, surface-level problem confined to the grout lines, a DIY approach is often possible. Use a hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner or a paste of baking soda and vinegar, scrub thoroughly, and ensure the area is completely dry afterwards. The key is improving ventilation; run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet surfaces.

However, the appearance of spots on the ceiling changes the situation. This suggests the mold is not just on the surface but may be spreading behind the tiles or above the ceiling, potentially due to a hidden leak from the shower or condensation in the AC ductwork. In the UAE, this is a frequent issue as AC vents often run in the ceiling void. When mold is visibly spreading or appearing on non-wet surfaces like a ceiling, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the moisture source. Without addressing the root cause, it will simply return.

For verifiable results, look for a provider that uses borescope inspections to see behind walls and lab analysis to identify the mold species, as this determines the appropriate remediation protocol.
